Medical Assistance In Dying and Mental Disorders
I’m fighting to secure equality for those whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness in Canada’s assisted dying legislation.
Medical assistance in dying (MAID) for those with a mental illness as the sole underlying condition – known as MAID MI-SUMC – is not currently available under the law in Canada. On February 29, 2024, Bill C-62 received Royal Assent, delaying MAID MD-SUMC until March 17, 2027. Dying With Dignity Canada (DWDC) has joined forces with Paliare Roland, Claire Elyse Brosseau, and John Scully in a court challenge to secure equality for those whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness in Canada’s assisted dying legislation. A claim was filed on August 19, 2024. Court challenges can be lengthy, and updates will be provided as they become available.
If we are to engage in a respectful dialogue, it’s vital to consider all viewpoints. Let’s prioritize understanding, and the recognition of our shared humanity.
I have been suffering from a mental health problem for over 20 years. My ability to function is limited because I have problems with concentration, mood, sleep and dark thoughts.
I take $8,000 worth of medication every year and my condition remains unstable every day. I've made 2 suicide attempts because I couldn't take it anymore. I applied for medical aid in dying, but was refused.
I hear voices and I'm depressed. I believe that medical aid in dying should allow people with mental disorders to receive this service. It's completely unfair right now, I've been waiting 6 years for this moment. I have to search about 30 times a day on the Internet for medical aid in dying in the hope of receiving this service.
